============================================= VINTAGE VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK
VIDEO PICK OF THE WEEK For the week of 29 February, 2008 This week in our archives page at: http://www.palmsradio.com/rockittext.htm Jimmie Rodgers -- Singing: '500 Miles'
Here is a link to a video taken on the recent cruise, on the Norwegian Star that Rock-it Radio DJ's Lane Quigley and Rick Ward attended. This Video is showing Jimmie Rodgers singing "500 Miles". Jimmie suffers from spasmodic dysphonia, which is a condition that affects the muscles in the vocal cords. At one point, the condition was so acute that he actually had to press on his chest to force air through his larynx in order to talk. He has regained his ability to speak. Last year Rock-it Radio followed the story on Jimmie Rodgers. Since the Mid 60's he has suffered from having a metal plate in his head that was greatly affecting his ability to do many routine tasks. Finally a doctor came forward with the offer of a risky surgery on the belief the skull may have grown back over all this time under the metal plate. Jimmie's son asked for prayers for this risky surgery if failed could of left Jimmie nearly a vegetable, but given the declining state of his health thought it was the only option. When they did the surgery they did find that the skull has completely grown under the plate and the plate was removed... and Jimmie has made a wonderful comeback and starting over where he left off in the mid 60's. Also, remember you can view the other past vintage video picks of the week at: http://www.rockitradio.net/video.html ============================================= Also, remember you can view the other past vintage video picks of the week at: http://www.rockitradio.net/video.html ============================================= ============================================= ROCK-IT RADIO EXPANDS ARCHIVES PAGE TO HOLD 18 SHOWS IN CELEBRATION OF 10 YEARS ONLINE.

ROCK-IT RADIO DJ'S RETURN FROM OLDIES CRUISE ABOARD NORWEGIAN STAR.
This past week -- Rock-it Radio DJ's Lane Quigley and Rick Ward along with there significant others ... were aboard the Cruise Ship Norwegian Star during an oldies music cruise -- Representing Rock-it Radio and early Rock and Roll in General and according to the report below had a wonderful time. Lane reports the following below.
Pat and I returned this morning from an amazing 8 day cruise to the Mexican Riviera. Lucky for us, we live an hour's drive from the port. Poor Rick & Judy Ward have a six hour wait for their flight to return home, and then they have to fly from LAX to Denver, change planes and on to Little Rock. By the time they get home, I'll probably be in bed, sound asleep. They say you're supposed to return from a cruise rested and refreshed. If that's the case, howcum I'm so damn tired? Oh, yeh,.... because for the last couple of days on the cruise, Pat & I turned back the clocks and acted like them young-uns. Spent an entire afternoon enjoying nachos and way too many margaritas while listening and dancing to a 70's band at Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo cafe in Cabo San Lucas two days ago. Then we spent last night dancing and chatting until the wee hours with a bunch of oldies lovers. Rick and Judy had to conserve their energy for their trip home, so they didn't join us for those festivities. But we spent a whole lotta time with them during the trip and they are both warm, funny and delightful to be around. Kudos are in order for Rick. This cruise was originally conceived by one of the DJ's on XM Radio known as "the Truckin' Bozo". He has a program on XM 171 that is primarily a talk show directed to long haul truckers. Rick, having driven truck for many years, is a frequent contributor to that program. Unfortunately, the host of the show took ill a couple of months ago and was unable to make it on the trip, and Rick wound up taking on the responsibility of producing, organizing and hosting the entertainment, which was a private concert on the last day of the cruise. The concert was the highlight of the trip. About 75% of the audience were truckers and their families. The remaining part of the audience were listeners to XM's 50's channel, and more specifically their terrific DJ Matt The Cat, who was also promoting this cruise on his program. For those who may not be familiar with him, Matt The Cat hosts his "Night Prowl" program weeknights on XM, and also produces an incredible weekly program called "Harlem" which spotlights R&B from the 40's/early 50's. He is in his early 30's (!) and has an incredible passion for the music that we all play here on RockitRadio. All in all, the Truckin' Bozo group plus the Matt The Cat contingent comprised about 400 of the ship's 2,000 passengers. Rick was the primary MC for the show and he was funny and a terrific host. The opening act was Rick's wife, Judy. She is an amazing singer, and she performed some r&b, some gospel and a most beautiful original love song that she composed. Pat & I had never seen Judy perform before, and we were astounded at her magnificent, powerful voice. Next on stage was Jimmie Rodgers, who was introduced by Matt the Cat. Many of you know that Jimmie underwent successful experimental brain surgery last June to remove a steel plate that he had been burdened with since 1967. During the week, I had a chance to sit down with Jimmie and record an interview where he tells his amazing story, and we will be featuring that on an upcoming Memory Lane Show. Jimmie is an incredible showman. One of the byproducts of his injury was damage to his vocal cords, restricting his ability to sing. His time on stage was mostly telling great stories and then lip-synching to his records with audience sing-a-long. It sounds hokey, but his stage presence make it work. His son, Michael Rodgers (who had several dance hits of his own in the 70's), came on stage to perform an original song that Jimmie had composed, which mesmerized the audience. Then Jimmie took his guitar and relayed a story about having done hundreds of shows with Buddy Holly, and explaining that they would often sit in the dressing room between shows singing songs. Then Jimmie sang one of the songs that they would sing together "500 Miles". Now, Jimmie's voice doesn't let him hit a lot of the notes but the feeling and intensity with which he performed that number was spine-tingling. At the end of the number, he deservedly received a long, loud standing ovation. Next up was Carl Dobkins, Jr. He was brought on stage by his sister-in-law, who is the wife of "the Truckin' Bozo" and she is also the travel agent that organized the cruise. Carl did a brief but nice set including two of his chart hits ("My Heart is an Open Book" and "If You Don't Want My Loving'") as well as a couple of other numbers. Finally, to close the show, Rick brought out Freddy "Boom Boom " Cannon. As Rick said in his introduction --- if you arent' dancing or tapping your feet when Freddy performs, you're dead and don't realize it. Freddy put on a high energy set that had the crowd rockin' and rollin' more than the ship on the choppy seas. During the program, Rick made sure to let the audience know all about Rock-it Radio. We handed out nearly 100 flyers that we made up for the event, and had a chance to chat with lots of XM listeners who promised to give Rock-it Radio a try. [Hey Bennie - since we promoted RockitRadio so heavily on this trip, can you reimburse us for the fare out of Launching Pad revenues ???].(My reply -- Ummmmmmmmmm I thinkI have enough to cover the gas to the dock in Long Beach let me get back to yah :-) ) Of course, there was a lot more to do during the 8 day cruise than just the concert. The food on board the Norwegian Star was plentiful and, for the most part, quite delicious. We had a chance to visit several of the cities along the Pacific Coast, and we were fortunate to have had perfect weather for the entire trip (until we returned to LA where it was raining). My only regret is that more of the Rock-it Radio DJ's were not able to join us on the cruise. It was a blast.
Lane

LETTERS MAKE IT ALL WORTH IT! Everyone here at Rock-it Radio do it pretty much as a labor of love. The income we make are sent back out in copyright fees, advertising, ebay fees, and bandwidth to keep the Rock-it flying. The DJ's aren't paid and do it to keep the music alive and still able to be heard out in the ether. Janci here at the Rock-it Radio store shared with me a very special letter from a lady on the east coast named Robyn-- And makes it all worth it here at Rock-it Radio. That gives us inspiration to do what we do and want to share it with all of you here this week on Rock-it Radio.
"Thank you Janci, I just had to reply and share this with you so that perhaps you will know how your CD's touch some people's lives. The Ray Ford CD is going to be a treasure for my Mom (& I) because she grew up just outside of Beckley WV from her birth in 1943 to 1963 when she moved here to Northern VA, met my Dad and married. The date of the broadcast you have of him was coincidentally her 17th birthday. I couldn't believe how that came together. The other thing is that both my Dad and my Aunt Jane have passed away in 2002 and 2004 respectively. They grew up here in Arlington VA and listened to WWDC as well as some of the other local stations. My Aunt was a 16 at the time of the Fred Fiske broadcast. She was a life long collector of Doo Wop, Rock & Roll, Pop and Country music and it was she would gave me the love the appreciation for the music of the 50's and 60's. She came by to have dinner with my Mom and I and brought an old worn notebook packed full of old newspaper clippings that were turning yellow and beginning to fall apart. I had seen them before but just out of the blue she brought me her collection of clippings from The Washington Star Newspaper's teen pages from the late 50's where they used to print articles about the latest singer, his/her latest hit, as well as did a chart listing of the various local stations and what was the #1, #2 record etc for that week. She had also handwritten some chart positions on notebook paper that covered a good portion of 1956 up to about 1961 (when she married). She said she knew it would be in good hands and thought I would enjoy scanning them into my computer to keep since she knew how much that sort of thing meant to me. Within 2 weeks of her leaving that with me, she passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in her sleep at the age of just 61 years. When she passed away, she left me her entire record collection which amounts to approximately 3,000-4,000 45's & LP's which added to my own collection which stands at approximately 7,000 records on it's own. The legacy she left me in the notebook and the 50 years of record collecting keeps her close in my heart and to my spirit, so the CD you offered of the Fred Fiske program will just add another little gem because it will be a little time capsule of her life (as I figure she might have heard that broadcast herself at the time). You are selling more than just CD's of old radio broadcasts. You are providing little pieces of the past that will surely enrich many lives just as these CD's are going to enrich mine. Thank you so much. Robyn"
