YOUR VINYL DESTINATION
WITH ROBERT BENSON

This week we thought we would look into the plot behind the movie
'Cadillac Records' in the theaters, Robert Benson was kind enought to
dwell into some facts and truths behind this movie on the story of
Chess Records.

Chess Records
Written by Robert Benson

Legendary record label founder Leonard Chess was inducted into the
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and for good reason. Together with
his brother Philip Chess, they founded the quintessential record label
of the time whose roster reads as a who’s-who in Blues music.
Let’s explore the history of Chess Records:
Brothers Leonard and Philip Chess were Jewish immigrants from Poland
who came to Chicago in 1928. They were business partners in liquor
sales and by the 1940’s they owned and operated several bars on the
south side. One of their largest was a nightclub named the “Macomba,”
that featured live entertainment; mainly Blues artists who had migrated
to Chicago’s south side from the Mississippi Delta in the 30’s and 40’s.
Quickly realizing that these musicians were not being properly promoted
and recorded, they decided to start recording these musicians
themselves.
In 1947, already aware of what kind of music would appeal to the Black
community, the brothers partnered with Charles and Evelyn Aron at
Aristocrat Records; who had formed the label specifically to record Blues,
Jazz and R&B music.
By 1949, Aristocrat Records (which would ultimately become Chess records
in 1950) was a fixture in the music world and some of these early recordings
remain some of the most impressive collection of Blues music ever recorded.
Their experience in music helped the brothers understanding of their
predominantly Black audiences and they knew what this audience craved.
But they soon realized that the Blues could be marketed to a much broader
audience.
With Philip Chess overseeing the nightclub and offices at Aristocrat/Chess,
this allowed Leonard to produce sessions as well as scout around for new
and upcoming talent. Through their connections with Chicago radio stations
and nightclubs, the pair was able to build an up and coming Blues musician,
Muddy Waters, into the area leading Blues attraction.
With the success of Muddy Waters, Blues musicians were drawn to Chicago
and Chess records. Artists such as slide guitarist Robert Nighthawk,
Willie Dixon, Gene Ammons, Jimmy Rogers and Little Walter (who
revolutionized the role of the harmonica in Chicago’s Blues music) were
all drawn to Chess- it gave them the chance to record their music and
helped promote themselves and the Blues music they loved so much.
However, despite the success, the Chess brothers had with incoming as
well as the local talent, they began to search outside of the city for more
talent. Leonard was in Memphis and supervised Memphis pianist Roscoe
Gordon and also shipped music by Rufus Thomas, Dr. Isaiah Ross,
Joe Hill Louis and Bobby Bland up to his brother in Chicago.
But one of his greatest finds and one of the top contributors to the label
was the music of Chester Arthur Burnett, a.k.a. Howlin’ Wolf.
Many more Blues legends recorded for Chess records in the 1950’s including
Memphis Slim, Eddie Boyd, Little Walter, Willie Mabon, John Lee Hooker,
Joe Williams, Big Bill Broonzy, and Washboard Sam. Jazzmen Leo Parker,
Tab Smith, Otis Spann, Lynn Hope and Eddie Johnson added diversity to
the record label.
But in 1955, Chess was able to sign a new talent named Chuck Berry, whose
first hit; “Maybellene” added even more credibility to the label. Another new
talent was also signed in 1955 (to Checker Records, a subsidiary of Chess),
a Mississippi Blues legend named Sonny Boy Williamson. His first recording
for the label, “Don’t Start Me Talkin’” was recorded with the help of the
Muddy Waters Band. Additionally, Bo Diddley signed in 1955 and produced
a two-sided smash hit for Checker, the self-titled ditty called “Bo Diddley and
the flipside, “I’m A Man.”
Furthermore, Chess Records branched out and signed and recorded two
Black vocal groups, the Flamingos and the Moonglows, whose sentimental
singing styles would appeal to both black and white audiences alike.
But before their records (“Sincerely” by the Moonglows and “I’ll Be Home”
by the Flamingos) could become hits, they were covered by white artists
(a common practice back then). The McGuire Sisters recorded “Sincerely”
and Pat Boone released his version of the Flamingos’ song “I’ll Be Home.”
Although these white artists garnered much of the sales, Chess Records
became nationally recognized as a record company that could produce
hit music.
In 1956, Chess established a Jazz subsidiary label called Argo. They were
able to land some of the biggest and influential Jazz musicians of the time,
signing such Jazz greats as Sonny Stitt, Yusef Lateef, James Moody, Gene
Ammons, Lou Donaldson, Ahmad Jamal and Ramsey Lewis, among
many others. Although Argo was primarily a Jazz label, they also recorded
some of the finest female R&B by a singer named Etta James.
Additionally in 1956, Chess had a keen interest in music form New Orleans
and signed veteran musician Paul Gayten. Gayten was able to convince
others from the area to sign on with Chess including Clarence “Frogman”
Henry, Bobby Charles and Eddie Bo.
Chess also had an extensive collection of recordings of gospel and religious
music. They devoted an entire series of recordings of sermons by the
Rev. C. L. Franklin, who was a pastor at the New Bethel Baptist Church,
located in Detroit, Michigan. They became the first record company to
record his daughter, Aretha Franklin and their gospel catalog also included
albums by the Five Blind Boys, the Soul Stirrers, Alex Bradford and
the Violinaires.
By the early 60’s, Chess records was a major player in the music industry,
selling records by the thousands. They were able to sign some new, young
talented musicians including Buddy Guy and Otis Rush. Etta James made
her Chess debut in 1960 and many other female artists signed and recorded
with the label including Jan Bradley, Sugar Pie De Santo, Fontella Bass,
Jackie Ross, Jo Ann Garrett, Laura Lee as well as a female vocal group
called the Gems (that counted Minnie Riperton as a member). Irma Thomas
also joined Chess in 1967, recording her music in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
When R&B merged with gospel influenced music, it formulated the foundation
for Soul music and right at the top of this transformation was Chess Records.
In fact, the late 60’s were extraordinary banner years for the now well–
established record label. But in 1968, after the departure of Billy Davis
and founding partner Leonard Chess (who left the record label to concentrate
his efforts in a radio station that he owned), much of the creative structure
was lost and many of the record producers and songwriters departed as well.
In 1969, Leonard and Philip Chess sold Chess Records to a company called
General Recorded Tape (GRT) for over six and a half million dollars
(plus twenty-thousand shares of GRT stock). The company also suffered
a devastating loss when Leonard Chess died that same year. The quality
of the music declined and by the summer of 1972, the Chess Chicago offices
were scarcely staffed, the distribution company and pressing plants had
been closed as well. In fact, the only Chess studio that was in operation
was the Chess Ter Mar studios, which were also operating with a
skeleton staff. By the summer of 1975, GRT was dismantling what
was left of the legendary record label. By August of 1975, all GRT
record operations had been shut down and what was left was sold to
a New Jersey-based company called All Platinum Records.
A catastrophic event occurred when the Chess building in Chicago
was sold and the new owners brought in dumpsters and chain saws and
destroyed over 250,000 vinyl records that had been abandoned. In one
of the music industry’s most appalling events, classic recordings by
Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, Etta James,
Muddy Waters and countless others were hauled away to the landfill.
Luckily, the master tapes survived this apocalyptic event and are now
the property of MCA Records which has reissued much of the classic
Chess material during the 1980’s and 1990’s.
In retrospect, the innovative genius of the Chess brothers, who certainly
had a clear eye for talent, is one of the most compelling stories in music
history. The now legendary musicians who recorded music at Chess
Records are some of the most influential artists of our generation; still
influencing a multitude of young musicians to this day.

Cadillac RecordsChess Records History Revealed

Cadillac Records is a 2008 musical biopic written and directed by Darnell
Martin. The film explores the musical era from the early 1940s to the late 1960s,
chronicling the life of the influential Chicago-based record-company executive
Leonard Chess, and the singers who recorded for Chess Records.
The film stars Adrien Brody as Chess, Cedric the Entertainer as Willie Dixon,
Mos Def as Chuck Berry, Columbus Short as Little Walter, Jeffrey Wright as
Muddy Waters, and Beyoncé Knowles as Etta James. The film has been
rated R by the MPAA for "pervasive langauge and some sexuality". The film
was released in North America on December 5, 2008.
I have not seen the movie, but from what I have read it is not the best,
historically speaking. Read on:

Controversy Over the Lack of Bo Diddley in Cadillac Records

One of Chess Records biggest stars in the 50's was iconic rocker Bo Diddley,
but there isn't even a mention of him in the new movie about the label,
Cadillac Records.
The movie even goes as far as opening with Jeffrey Wright, who plays
Muddy Waters, singing “I'm a Man.” Unfortunately, Waters never
recorded the song, at least under that title. It is known that Diddley based
“I'm a Man” on Waters’ “She Moves Me” and that Waters did recorded
a variant of the song, called “Mannish Boy,” but he never officially
recorded the song he is singing in the film.
So what happened? Diddley's former manager Margo Lewis has her own
ideas. "It's no secret that Bo had real issues with the Chess Brothers and
their 'creative accounting practices'.
"It was Bo's recollection that every time he or another performer would
go to the Chess offices to ask for their royalties, they were given the keys
to a new Cadillac instead. So, in that regard, at least they got the title of
the movie right.
"Regardless, we are shocked that the producers would omit such a seminal
figure as Bo."

YOUR VINYL DESTINATION
WITH ROBERT BENSON

SPOTLIGHT ON ROY ORBISON

To many, Roy Orbison is best known for his highly successful single
"Oh, Pretty Woman." But Orbison's career spanned many decades
and he was an accomplished songwriter and legendary performer.
Let's explore the life of this music legend:
Roy Orbison was born in Vernon, Texas in 1936 and music quickly
became an important element in his life. His father gave him a guitar
when he was six years old and by the age of thirteen he organized his
first band called "The Wink Westerners," which was named after the
town that his family had relocated to.
The band had some success on local television and was allotted 30
minute weekly shows.
It was at one of these shows where Orbison met one of his guests, a man named Johnny Cash. Cash advised him to try and get a contract with record producer Sam Phillips of Sun Records. Phillips would turn them down at first, but relented and added the band to the Sun roster after hearing a recording that was created at Norman Petty's studio in Clovis, N.M.
The band was renamed "The Teen Kings." Orbison left for college in
March of 1956 and ultimately headed for Sun Records in Memphis to
pursue a career in music.
His first commercially successful song came in June of 1956 with the
Rockabilly single called "Ooby Dooby" (which was written by friends of Orbison). His song "Claudette" (named after his first wife) was recorded by the Everly Brothers in 1958 and was included as the B-side to their smash hit, "All I Have To Do Is Dream" (Claudette peaked at #30 in May of 1958).
However, Orbison's breakthrough hit was "Only The Lonely," which was a 1960 #2 hit in the US as well as #1 hit in the UK. Orbison had met songwriter Joe Melson and liking the way that Melson incorporated melodic twists and lyrical styling into his songs, asked him to write with him.
Together, they created the unique sound that Orbison would soon be
famous for; the dramatic rock ballad.
Orbison also scored a #1 US hit in 1961 with the song "Running Scared,' as well as scoring another #1 hit in the US with the cut "Crying," an almost over-the-top ballad that featured his brilliant and now internationally famous warble.
In 1963, he headlined a tour with the Beatles, but was soon demoted to the opening act. Nonetheless, he developed lifelong friendships with the band, especially George Harrison and John Lennon. In fact, Orbison encouraged the Fab Four to come to the United States and try and sell their sound.
When the British Invasion broke out in 1964, Orbison was one of the few who survived. His single, "Oh, Pretty Woman," actually broke the Beatles stranglehold on the Top Ten, catapulting to the #1 position in August of 1964 (where it would remain for three weeks). In fact, the record sold more copies in the first ten days than any other single up to that time and would go on to sell more than 7 millions copies.
The song was written in one afternoon while Orbison and his songwriting friend Bill Dees were working. Orbison's wife at the time, Claudette, was leaving to do some shopping when Orbison asked her if she needed any money; to which Bill Dees interjected, "A pretty woman never needs any money." They both thought that it would make a great song title and by thetime that Claudette returned home from her shopping trip, the duo had written the now legendary song.
Many people often wonder if Orbison had eye problems which forced him to wear sunglasses, even at night. He did not have a specific eye ailment; the sunglasses actually became part of his persona by pure accident. You see, after flying in to Alabama for a performance, Orbison accidently left his regular glasses on the plane and didn't realize he had his sunglasses on until the evening; but by then he had no choice, he had to wear the sunglasses or no glasses at all and not be able to see.
So he went onstage wearing the dark glasses and the next day he flew to England to tour with the Beatles. Again, he was forced to wear the
sunglasses and photographs of him and the Beatles circulated worldwide, and, although it was all unplanned, he was stuck with the new image and kept it throughout his amazing career.
In 1965, Orbison left Monument Records opting to move over to MGM,
a label that promised him more money. Unfortunately, he would not make the Top Ten in the US again until 1989 when his collaboration with the Traveling Wilburys (Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and George Harrison) netted him a #9 hit with the cut "You Got It."
But Orbison was a world-wide music sensation and he remained very
popular in Europe and Australia. In fact, his cut "Working For The Man" topped the Australian charts and the song "Too Soon To Know" peaked at #3 in England. He was also very popular in Germany, actually recording his hit song "Mama" in the native tongue. In France, he was viewed as the master of lost love ballads and a cover version of his 1963 hit, "Blue Bayou" (#29 on the Billboard Top 40 chart and a #3 hit for Linda Ronstadt in 1977), that was performed in French by Mireille Mathieu topped the French charts.
Additionally, fans in the Netherlands formed his largest worldwide fan club.
Personal tragedy, sadly, was also a part of Orbison's life. In 1966, he lost his wife Claudette to a motorcycle accident and a couple of years later, while he was away on a tour of England, he lost two of his sons to a terrible house fire that destroyed his home in Tennessee. His third son was miraculously saved by his parents.
Orbison was obviously devastated and to try and block out all his pain
by touring constantly. In 1969, he remarried and started a new family, but he did not perform in the United States again until 1977.
The 1970's were a down time for Orbison, although he continued to
tour and release music, the albums did not fare as well as his
previously released material. He tried his hand at country music
with the LP "I'm Still In Love With You," and also released the album
"Regeneration" in 1976. Things got so bad that in 1979, Orbison
even attempted releasing a disco music album called "Laminar Flow."
In the 1980's, Orbison's career enjoyed a rebirth of sorts.
He collaborated with Emmylou Harris on the song, "That Lovin'
You Feeling Again," which would go on to win the 1981 Grammy
Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group.
He also recorded the song "Wild Hearts" for inclusion in the film
"Insignificance" and the song "In Dreams" was included in the
David Lynch movie "Blue Velvet." He also re-recorded his 1961 hit
"Crying" as a duet with k. d. lang for the movie "Hiding Out" (which
would earn him another Grammy Award). All these things helped
Orbison regain his popularity.
His 1987 HBO Special, "Roy Orbison and Friends" was accompanied
by a who's-who supporting cast including musical director T-Bone
Burnett, pianist Glen Hardin (who had played with Buddy Holly and Elvis), guitarist James Burton (also played with Elvis), background singers Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt and Jennifer Warnes. All loved Orbison and lobbied to participate and the special helped Orbison gain the attention of a younger generation.
Shortly after the performance, he teamed up with the previously
mentioned rock stars (Lynne, Harrison, Dylan and Petty) to form
the Traveling Wilburys, who achieved mass commercial appeal
and success. He also recorded a new solo LP, "Mystery Girl,"
which yielded his last hit "You Got It."
Sadly, during the afternoon of December 6, 1988, after spending
time shopping for model airplanes (a hobby throughout his career
and one he thoroughly enjoyed), he complained of chest pains and
was rushed to a hospital in Hendersonville, Tennessee.
Roy Orbison died shortly thereafter.

MOTOWN CELEBRATES IT'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY
By: Robert Benson

As this historic record label commemorates its 50th year in the
music industry, let's learn more about the history of this iconic
music leader:

"One of the principles we had at Motown was that success will come,
but that is not enough," founder Berry Gordy explained. "You had to be proud of yourself in order to achieve true happiness. And if you do it right, not only will you be successful, you'll be happy. And at Motown, we're the happiest people in the world."

His feelings on the meaning of Motown border on the mystical.

"Motown is a magical something that has never been seen before and will never be seen again. Because the world has changed for the worse. And to have a company like that is probably impossible now. It was too simple to be believed."

Berry Gordy is indeed a happy man. He formed the Motown Record
Corporation in 1960 after a year of being called Tamla Records.
And now, fifty years later, the world will help celebrate the
legendary record label with a series of gala events.

Berry Gordy actually started his career in the music industry as a
songwriter for local Detroit musicians such as Jackie Wilson and The
Matadors. In fact, Wilson's single, "Lonely Teardrops" became a
huge hit, but Gordy did not feel that he made as much money as he deserved and soon Grody realized that the more lucrative part of the music industry was in producing and owning the publishing rights.

So, with an $800 loan from family members, Gordy started Tamla
Records, signing his first act, The Matadors (who changed their
name to The Miracles). In fact, The Miracles lead singer, Smokey
Robinson became vice president of the company and many of Gordy's family also assumed roles in the company.

In 1959, Gordy purchased property that would eventually become
Tamla's "Hitsville U.S.A."studio. The property was modified into
a small recording studio with Gordy moving into the second floor
living quarters. Over the next few years, Motown would go on to own several more neighboring houses, with administrative offices, mixing and mastering studios and rehearsal studios.

Success came quickly for the new record label, the first hit single
was Barretts Strong's "Money (That's What I Want)" in 1959 (#2 on
Billboard R&B charts) and the first #1 R&B hit was "Shop Around," by The Miracles in 1960 (which also peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was Motown's first million-dollar selling record).

From 1961-1971, Motown Records had 100 Top Ten Hits from such music artists as Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Four Tops and the Jackson 5, among others. In addition, the company operated several other record labels (besides releases on the Tamla and Motwon labels) including "Gordy," which featured such acts as the Temptations, the Contours and Martha & the Vandellas, "V.I.P," which released music by the Velvelettes and the Spinners. Another label, "Soul" released recordings by Jr. Walker & the All Stars, Jimmy Ruffin and Gladys Knight & the Pips. Other labels included "Workshop Jazz" (which released Jazz music), Mel-o-dy (country music) and "Rare Earth," which focused on rock recordings.
Gordy utilized the slogan "The Sound Of Young America" and Motown acts enjoyed widespread popularity with both black and white audiences.

The "Motown Sound" is what made the music appealing. This was a
unique combination of tambourines to accent the back beat, prominent and melodic electric bass lines, distinctive chord structures and a call and response singing style that had its origins in gospel music. Add to this the use of orchestral string sections, bluesy horns and carefully arranged background vocals and the recipe was complete.

Gordy also surrounded himself with some of the best songwriters and producers in music at the time, including the songwriting trio of
Holland-Dozier-Holland (brothers Brian and Eddie Holland and Lamont Dozier), Norman Whitfield, Barrett Strong, Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson, Frank Wilson and many others.

The Motown Sound also had a profound influence on other musicians of the time including Dusty Springfield and the Foundations, among others. In the UK, the Motown Sound was the basis of the "Northern Soul" phenomenon.

Adding to Motown's worldwide appeal was Gordy's practice of using a group of select studio musicians, collectively known as the "Funk
Brothers," who would record the instrumental tracks for the songs.
Included in this ensemble were keyboard players, Earl Van Dyke,
Johnny Griffith and Joe Hunter, guitarists Joe Messina, Robert
White, and Eddie Willis, percussionists Eddie "Bongo" Brown and
Jack Ashford, drummers Benny Benjamin, Uriel Jones and Richard
"Pistol" Allen and the bass playing of James Jamerson and Bob
Babbitt. Much of the Motown Sound was made by the use of over
dubbing instrumentation and the use of two drummers to go along with three or four guitar lines.

Gordy was also a master marketer, his acts were well-groomed, well-dressed and their appearances were expertly choreographed. Gordy's reasoning was that Motown artists were ambassadors for other African-American artists who sought broad market appeal and thought that they should act accordingly.

By 1969, Motown began its gradual move from Detroit to Los Angles, with its main objective to branch out into the television and
motion picture industries. Gordy formed Motown Productions which
provided some very memorable TV specials including TCB with Diana Ross & the Supremes and the Temptations, Diana! (with Diana Ross) as well as "Goin' Back to Indiana," with the Jackson 5. Additionally, after the loss of the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland (who left because of royalty payment disputes), the company loosened its productions rules allowing some of the longtime acts the opportunity to write and produce their own material. The result was the release of some classic albums such as Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On"(1971), and "Let's Get It On"(1973) and three fantastic LP's from Stevie Wonder, "Music Of My Mind" in 1971, "Talking Book" in 1972 and "Innervisions" in 1973.

In addition to establishing branch offices in New York City and Los
Angles, Motown also produced several hit films, including "Lady
Sings The Blues" and "Mahogany," both starring Diana Ross. Other
Motown films included "Thank God It's Friday" in 1978, "The Wiz," in
1978 and Berry Gordy's "The Last Dragon" in 1985.

Motown continued with its successful musical acts in the late 70's
and into the 80's with acts such as Lionel Richie, The Commodores,
Rick James and DeBarge, among others. Despite this success, by the mid-1980's Motown was losing money and consequently Gordy sold his ownership rights in Motown Records to Music Corporation of America
(MCA) and Boston Ventures in June 1988. In 1989, Gordy sold the
Motown Productions operations to Motown executive Suzanne de Passe, who renamed the company de Passe Entertainment.

Despite major recording starts such as Boys II Men, among others,
during the 1990's the company remained in a state of turmoil.
Numerous executives were appointed by MCA and a multitude of legal issues plagued the company. But by 1999, Motown was again a driving force in the music industry with such acts as 702, Brian McKnight, and Erykah Badu.

Motown's (which has merged with Universal Records to become
Universal Motown Records Group) current roster includes many R&B
super stars such as India Arie, Mya, Kem, Yummy Bingham, Badu, pop superstar Lindsay Lohan, reggae stars Damien and Stephen Marley and many more. Additionally, Universal Motown Records Group has retained Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and the Temptations.

In Motown, Berry Gordy was able to adeptly blend R&B and Soul with mainstream pop music to create a "super" record label. This
template can never be duplicated, but the world of music is by far
a better place because of Berry Gordy's visions and unique management.

SATELLITE MODEM STOPS ROCK-IT RADIO
PROGRAMMING IN IT'S TRACKS.

On the evening of Wednesday December 3, 2008 -- The Modem
to the Rock-it Radio Satellite link died. The HN 7000S from Huges
Network after 22 months of steady operation gave out. And quickly
forced Rock-it Radio to it's back up system of 28k dial up.
On December 4th, I contacted Hughes communications and
will be getting a upgrade modem for Rock-it Radio. But until the upgrade can be completed - Rock-it Radio will remain on dial up. Making new programming and uploading almost impossible with time restraints. Even doing this newsletter at 2:00 a.m. has proved maddening and it was decided to suspend further programming until the repair can be made. A Technician is suppose to contact us within 72 hours and then based on the availability of them to come out to them. We are hoping for a quick fix and will keep you posted on the new system.

Radio Pioneer Bill Drake Dies Of Cancer
Reported by: Rock-it Radio writer - Robert Benson

Legendary radio programmer, Bill Drake, who helped revolutionize and revamp Top 40 radio in the 1960's, died suddenly last Saturday; he was 71.

Bill Drake (real name- Phillip Yarbrough) started his radio career
at an early age (he was still in high school) in the late 50's at
WAKE in Atlanta, Georgia and finished his career on the West Coast.
In between, Drake became one of the most powerful men in the radio industry, incorporating his formula for success- (which is referred to as the "Drake Format") which was less talk, fewer commercials and more music.

"What he did for American radio, particularly the Top 40 format, was
to clean up all the clutter, such as disc jockeys rambling on and on
forever," said John Long, the president of the Georgia Radio Hall of
Fame, which inducted Drake in 2007.

But Drake didn't take the dee jay away from the audience, he limited the amount of DJ chatter, the number of advertisements and played only the top hits. Many DJ's had to change their methods, if they had something to say, it better be important and to the point; the DJ couldn't be more important than the music.

Drake met Gene Chenault at KYND in Fresno, California and together the pair developed highly influential radio programming strategies and tactics which included the use of jingles (most by the Johnny Mann Singers), radio contests, tighter playlists of current hits
news updates, traffic reports and other elements that were designed
to make Top 40 radio particularly attractive to people who listened
to the radio in their cars. Drake is also credited as being the
first radio programmer to utilize market research to facilitate
great programming which helped many of the radio stations that he
worked at become the top stations in their respective market.

In the late 60's/early 70's, the Drake-Chenault team marketed their
format in the form of customized Johnny Mann jingles which were sold in the US and overseas. They also marketed "automated" radio packages such as "Hit Parade," "Solid Gold," "Classic Gold" and
"Great American Country." Drake also created the 48-hour radio
special called "The History of Rock & Roll," (which first aired in
February of 1969) and later voiced an updated version that was
broadcast on over 400 radio stations nationwide.

The Drake-Chenault Corporation was sold and eventually dissolved in the mid 80's, but the team's radio specials are still available
today.

Back in his day, radio was the tool for music and Drake understood
its role in marketing music, the DJ's role and the business side of
the format. A radio legend, his concepts and ideology are still
used today. Bill Drake was a radio pioneer and will be missed by'
millions.
