For each of the past seven years, legendary East Coast dj Bill Green has joined Lane Quigley for a series of East Coast/West Coast Battle of the Records on the Memory Lane Show. ============================================= ----------------- FENDER SKIRTS ------------------
Lane Quigley of the Memory Lane Show forwarded this to me and we figured it would be pretty appropriate for our Rock-it Radio Listener Club members so here it is :)
Fender Skirts? What the heck is a fender skirt? I came across this phrase yesterday "FENDER SKIRTS". A term I haven't heard in a long time and thinking about "fender skirts" started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice. Like "curb feelers" and "steering knobs." Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first. Any kids will probably have to find some elderly person over 50 to explain some of these terms to you Remember "Continental kits?" They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental. When did we quit calling them "emergency brakes?" At some point "parking brake" became the proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with "emergency brake." I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the "foot feed" Didn't you ever wait at the street for your daddy to come home, so you could ride the "running board" up to the house? Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never anymore - "store-bought." Of course, just about everything is store-bought these days. But once it was bragging material to have a store-bought dress or a store-bought bag of candy. "Coast to coast" is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the term "world wide" for granted. This floors me. On a smaller scale, "wall-to-wall" was once a magical term in our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered his or her hardwood floors with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure. When's the last time you heard the quaint phrase "in a family way?" It's hard to imagine that the word "pregnant" was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company. So we had all that talk about stork visits and "being in a family way" or simply"expecting." Apparently "brassiere" is a word no longer in usage. I said it the other day and my daughter cracked up. I guess it's just "bra" now "Unmentionables" probably wouldn't be understood at all. I always loved going to the "picture show," but I considered "movie" an affectation. Most of these words go back to the '50s, but here's a pure-'60s word I came across the other day - "rat fink." Ooh, what a nasty put-down! Here's a word I miss - "percolator." That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with? "Coffee maker." How dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this. I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro. Words like "DynaFlow" and "Electrolux." Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with "SpectraVision!" Food for thought - Was there a telethon that wiped out lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that's what castor oil cured, because I never hear mothers threatening kids with castor oil anymore. Some words aren't gone, but are definitely on the endangered list. The one that grieves me most "supper." Now everybody says "dinner." Save a great word. Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts. Someone forwarded this to me. I thought some of us of a "certain age" would remember most of these. Just for fun, Pass it along to others of "a certain age " and if they like it they will probably like Rock-it Radio online as well :)

A special celebration is being held in the Shoals area of Alabama. It's the first annual tribute to Sam Phillips and will be held January of 2006. Jerry Lee Lewis will headline the event.
Sam's son Jerry is the owner of Big River Broadcasting who is sponsoring part of the event. ============================================= REST IN PEACE BARBARA PITTMAN -- SUN RECORD PERFORMER
She may of never had a charted hit but we are saddened to report the passing of Barbara Pittman. Only a handfull of female vocalists performed Rockabilly in the 1950's. Wanda Jackson for Capitol Records, and Janis Martin for RCA were a couple of the Big Names in female vocalist Rockabilly and Barbara Pittman was with Sam Phillips and SUN Records. Below is an obituary we received online.
Courtesy Stephen D Price & Memphis Commercial Appeal - Rockabilly singer Barbara Pittman never had a smash hit, but could always find work performing. The Sun Records and Phillips International recording artist's popularity in Europe remained constant, and she last performed in England in March. "She made her living singing. I never knew Barbara to do anything else," said Pittman's sister, Carlene Day of Arlington. Pittman died at her Memphis home Oct. 29 of heart failure. She was 67. Best known for the classic "I Need a Man," Pittman was born in North Memphis. Her mother was friends with Gladys Presley and Pittman and Elvis Presley knew each other as children. Early in their careers, the young singers one night stayed up late taking publicity photos of each other. "They were up to 3 in the morning," Day said. "She got in trouble with Mama for that. She said, 'But Mama, it's Elvis.' Mama said, 'I don't care who it is.'" Pittman began thinking of a singing career when she won a high school talent contest, Day said. As a child, Pittman spent time at her uncle's pawn shop on Beale Street, where she listened to jam sessions with B.B. King. When she was 10 or 11, she auditioned for Sun Records, only to be told by Sam Phillips to come back when she learned how to sing. Later Phillips would be impressed by a demo she cut, "Playing for Keeps," and recorded her first session at Sun in 1956, according to the Rockabilly Hall of Fame Web site. Other singles followed, including "No Matter Who's to Blame," "Two Young Fools in Love" and "I'm Getting Better all the Time." John Singleton, president of Sun Entertainment in Nashville, said Phillips used mostly male singers but liked Pittman. Day said her sister had a good sense of humor and "could tap dance. She could do anything." After that trip to England in March of 2005, Day said her sister's health declined. A memorial service was held Saturday, 5th November at Family Funeral Care in Memphis. The Rockabilly Hall of Fame will soon host a special tribute page for Barbara where fans, friends and family may share their thoughts about her life and career. The Rockabilly Hall of Fame has also listed a website in her memory that is also listed in the Rock-it Radio Rockabilly page.

NORTH VS. SOUTH WILL BE ONLINE IN THE ARCHIVES THE ENTIRE MONTH OF NOVEMBER! ------
BILL GREEN JOINS LANE QUIGLEY IN STUDIO "B" FOR A NORTH/SOUTH BATTLE ON THE MEMORY LANE SHOW ON ROCK-IT RADIO SHOW #1482
For each of the past seven years, legendary East Coast dj Bill Green has joined Lane Quigley for a series of East Coast/West Coast Battle of the Records on the Memory Lane Show. This has proven to be an immensely popular series, and last year a whole bunch of listeners suggested that they add a North/South battle. They flipped a coin, and it came up North for Bill.
New listeners of the Memory Lane Show may be unfamiliar with the format. There are 12 rounds. In each round, Bill selected a record from one of the Northern U.S. States to start the round. Lane then matched each tune with a song from one of the Southern states that has some common thread with Bill's tune. The listeners are asked to vote for their preference round-by-round. The polls will remain open throughout the entire month of November, In early December, the results will be tabulated and posted. Three lucky listeners will be selected from all of the e-mail entries and will win prizes from the Rockit Store.
Join the fun and vote for your favorites in the North/South Battle. You may wish to simply copy-and-paste this songlist into an email, check off your votes and mail them to MemoryLaneShow@rockitradio.net or MemoryLaneShow@aol.com Lane and Bill would also love to hear your comments on the program. You can write to Lane at either of those addresses, or directly to Bill at RetroRockBill@aol.com .

All of the DJ's here at Rock-it Radio are putting there time in for the love of the music and the joy we get from the letters from our listeners. But it still takes money to bring these shows online. Copyright fees (Ascap, BMI, SESAC, RIAA all want $$ from Rock-it Radio) and band and webspace etc. So if you can when you are purchasing Music or Books etc. Could you please use the links to Amazon.com on our website or check out the Oldies music we have in our Rock-it Store.
